Daddy's Sweetie

4-5-10
On April 5th Isla started saying "Dah-Dee" in addition to "Dah-Dah."
Isla LOVES her Daddy. They love playing "Ee-guh." (Eagle) and flying around the house.
Isla lights up whenever she hears her special song written just for her by Daddy.
"Who's the cutest baby in the world? Isla Marie!
Who is Isla Marie, that is you, you, you!
You're the cutest baby! Sitting right in front of me!
...and your cutest baby name is, Isla Marie! Isla Marie!"

January 2012
We went to the beach today. In & Out, a very windy day, lots of kite surfers, tons of shells washed up from winter surf, and the one spot on the coast that wasn't fogged in = a beautiful beach trip. Isla fell in and swallowed some sea water. She says it tastes like salt and pepper.

Oh Happy Days! - Part 1 Our Magical Morning!

February 2012
Two weeks ago we went to Disneyland!
Fun doesn't begin to describe the time we had. It was truly magical.

We almost didn't get to go because Isaac was really sick the week before, but he rallied and we got directions to the nearest Children's Hospital just to ease my anxieties and went.
On Saturday we woke up at 4AM & got ready to go. We woke Isla at 4:45AM & changed her into her surprise outfit - a Minnie Mouse hoodie & matching shirt. Isaac had a Mickey onsie. We thought Isla would sleep in the car, but the excitement combined with the Disney music & the beautiful sunrise kept her awake. She talked our ears off and sang the entire way down. We drove straight to the parking lot, arriving 10 minutes before it opened & I did Isla's hair while we were waiting. Then we boarded the bus and head off to The Happiest Place on Earth!
On the bus to the Happiest Place on Earth!

Our 1st stop was Breakfast with Minnie at the Plaza Inn. I made reservations for an early breakfast so we could get into the park 30 minutes early. We got buttons at the gate and headed down Main Street to the Plaza in. I'd read that Character dining events were a fun experience, but this wildily exceeded my expectations. I was told there would be Minnie and at least 3 other Characters at the Breakfast. There was Minnie, Chip, Dale, Tweedle Dee, Tweedle Dum, Goofy's Son, Eyore, Tigger, Brer Bear, a Penguin from Mary Poppins, Captain Hook, & Cinderella's Fairy Godmother. We went in & Isla got a Minnie Balloon, a card & a birthday button. Then we went to our table and the characters flocked to Isla. Isla has always loved characters, but I was worried that she might be more nervous now that she is older. (She has developed many new fears - "Mooooommm! The bushes are TOO close! - said while driving on the freeway.) Thankfully these new fears did not hinder her from having a blast with the characters. She talked and talked to them, hugged them, introduced them to Isaac, danced with Minnie, and could have happily spent 4 hours, instead of the 90 minutes we were there. The only one who made her nervous was Captain Hook and he was very good at giving her personal space and later she waved at him in the Parade like he was her BFF. Because we went early there weren't many people eating yet, so Isla had multiple Characters visiting her the whole time. Once more people showed up Isla had enchanted the Characters so much that we still always had a crowd around the table. Minnie visited multiple times and came over when it was time to dance, and also noticed Isla's sweatshirt. (I'd read that the Character's like it when you wear their clothes and that seemed to be true.) Isla told Minnie she was going to ask Santa for white gloves, yellow shoes and a polka dot skirt for Christmas and Minnie loved that too. At one point Chip was visiting & Isla said, "Chip, go get Dale" and he ran off and got Dale away from other diners. We had to remind her to eat or she wouldn't have eaten a thing. The breakfast buffet was huge & delicious. Andrew & I spent the time grinning at each other, Isla, and the Characters, silently congratulating ourselves on being awesome parents. Isaac spent the time sleeping & posing with all the Characters who ooohhhed & awwwed over him. Just writing about it brings a smile. It was the perfect introduction to Disneyland.

For the Record!

Sometime in 2010...
Isla is such a ham!
We don't catch it on camera very often because she is also very camera shy. I blame this entirely on me - She has had a camera shoved in her face since birth. Up until about 6 months she loved it and smiled away for the camera, but now she looks away or walks towards me and out of the frame.

Our Super Trooper!

From March 2011
Isla had her endoscopy & sigmoidoscopy today.
She was amazing (as always) & took it all in stride (as much as can be expected). She is a trooper and we are so proud of her.

The experience was both traumatizing and completely not traumatizing - it is hard to explain.

The procedure was done at our local children's hospital in a beautiful pristine child friendly facility. I know this shouldn't matter, but it did. The environment put us all at ease.

We checked in at 8 am. Isla had to have a special diet & meds last night & this morning to prepare her. (She helped out by throwing up after getting the meds last night.) She also has either a cold or nasal allergies (she's off her allergy meds), so I was a little worried that after all this time she wasn't going to be able to be scoped. After getting weighed, measured, vitals checked, and changed into a tiny & sort of heartbreaking purple hospital gown with astronaut koalas all over it, we met with the admitting nurse. She went over Isla's allergies & diet (for the 4th time that morning - they even had a red id for her to wear identifying her allergies). Next we met with the GI Doc and then the anethesiologist (more allergy review.) Next Rolando, the really tall, super kind OR nurse, who looked like he'd be as comfortable on the football field as he was in the hospital, came in. He took us to a private parent waiting room and then scooped up Isla. We gave her kisses & she went without complaint with Rolando. She was a little worried when I first gave him to her, but after we all reassured her she seemed fine & Andrew saw her looking around as Rolando walked her off.

We waited in the parent room with a big poster of the intestinal tract & I cried a little & prayed and then we read and tried not to think about everything. Soon the GI came in with some lovely photos of Isla's very pretty and healthy looking esophagus, stomach, small intestine & colon. The Dr. said that everything looked great visually, which is a good sign! We will meet with him on the 29th to review the biopsy. The doctor also said that Isla did really well during the scope.

After our meeting we went out to the main waiting room. The nurse told us that Isla was sleeping & we could expect her to wake in 40 minutes or so. About 5 minutes later the nurse rushed out and said to come back. Only one of us was allowed to go back, so Andrew kindly let me go see her (Thank you Honey!)

I rushed back to the recovery room & I could hear Isla before I could see her. The first thing I thought when I saw her was, "What did we do to her?!?!" She was covered in tubes, ripping off her oxygen mask & screaming crying. It was exactly the same reaction she had after she got her epipen and completely awful to witness. When she saw me the nurse had to hold her down to keep her from climbing out of bed into my arms. As soon as we got her a little more calm the nurse & I dressed her. She woke up so fast & furious that the nurse said that she wasn't able get her get her diaper or gown back on.

Once she was in her gown & diaper I was able to hold her, wrapped in warm blankets, and still covered with tubes. I got out her Curious George & she wanted to snuggle him, but continued to cry hard for another 20 minutes & then cry off and on for a while. After a while they unhooked her and tried to have her drink a little juice - she was not having it. She eventually ate some popsicle & then drank some gatoraide & we were cleared to leave. Isla was able to walk out and the Anesthesiologist (who was really awesome - ever since my epidural I have a special love for anesthesiologists), came over to say good-bye and was completely charmed by Isla.

Isla wanted more popsicles, so we picked some up on the way home. When we got home she wanted to play & ate a big lunch. She had a slightly high temp this afternoon & took a super nap, but other than that and a very grovelly phlegmy voice, she seems 100%.

I'm really happy it went so well & I'm so thankful that Isla did so well. We are lucky to have such great care available in our area.

Teddy Bear Medicine

Sometime in Spring 2011...
Isla was recently diagnosed with asthma, so the illness was a crash course in using her rescue inhaler. It works like a charm and she is really good about it. Her allergist said to give her a treat for doing the inhaler, so Isla has come up to me a few times and said, "I think I need Teddy Bear medicine." - um, you mean, "I think I need candy?" (Isla calls it teddy bear medicine b/c there is a teddy bear on the spacer.)

DOP Update

Spring 2011...
This week I did a little better adding some spark to our day to day routine...
Monday - We made & decorated paper plate fishies.
Tuesday - We went to a kiddie concert & made our own kazoos & a drum. Isla LOVES the drum & can beat out a rhythm like a champ.

On a side note, Isla is going to be a flower girl in my sister's wedding this summer. On Tuesday we were talking about the wedding. She wants to wear a yellow dress and told me that Auntie April is going to marry a sea turtle. I said that I think she'll probably marry Uncle Will. She said that a turtle will be at the wedding. I hope my sister has booked her turtle. There is always a rush on turtles during wedding season.

Around the Town...

Spring 2011
We've been having lots of playdates & outings lately. Today we fed the ducks at the library & they were so hungry they tried pecking my feet. Isla fell backwards as the ducks advanced on her. She didn't freak out, but when I asked if she wanted to feed more ducks today & she laughed & then said "No, not today." very seriously.

Isla has been saying all kinds of funny things too. She was trying on my chapstick & after trying two different chapsticks she turned to me & said, "Cuties usually wear two make-ups?" I asked if she meant chapsticks & she said, "Yes, Cuties usually wear two chapsticks." Guess who the cutie is that she is referring too?

Today after a playdate she told me that her favorite parts of the playdate were, "getting nakey without even a diaper" (they played on a slip & slide) & "Finding that Noah has Lightening McQueen & Mader that are just like my Lightening McQueen & Mader in my bed." (She is really into Cars - the first movie & sleeps with a matchbox Lightening McQueen & Mader.)

Happy Birthday USA!!!

July 2011
We had a wonderful 4th of July with Bryan, Gretchen, Charlotte & Iris.
It was really fun to catch up after our long trip up north.
As always we had an amazing meal & tons of fun, but I lost my camera (Lost = left it sitting right in front of everything on top of my cookbooks. I seriously have pregnancy brain!) so we don't have any pictures.

We went to our neighborhood parade & Isla LOVED it! She was enthralled by all the Girl & Boy Scouts & band, fire truck & other fun vehicles. She is still a little anxious about ambulances & kept asking me why it was in the parade. I reassured her that it was just there for us to look at and wasn't taking anyone to the hospital. After the parade Isla ran around & yelled "I'm parading," "I'm a Parader!" She got out her pinwheel & fancy shoes & marched & spun around. It was really cute.

Here we are watching the parade...

Rational Thought...

September (before the 13th) 2011
I can't remember all the definitions for operational, pre-operational, etc. thinking. I think Isla is in the pre-operational phase, but I don't have the energy to even google it or re-remember what that means.

But...she is doing a lot of great reasoning & it is fun to watch the wheels turning...

Here are a few examples...
- On our way to preschool today (another SUPER day), we passed a car wash (one of Isla's many fears). We chatted about the car wash and the features of the car wash and as we drove down the street Isla pointed to a car with water drops on it and said, "That car went through the car wash." I asked her why, and she said, "Because it is all wet!"

Ok, maybe just one for now - I know she said something else similar, but I can't remember...

Also, we got a matching memory game today. We haven't played memory yet, but we took turns finding matches today and she loved it so much we had to play twice. I showed her how to use her finger to scan the rows and she is so cute scanning - she hold her finger about 6 inches above the cards and mutters to herself about what she's looking for. e.g. "Nooo...not the pickle mobile (it is a Busy Town game), noooo that's the banana car, not a match...no, no, no...The Pickle CAR! A MATCH!"

So much for that...

Sometime in 2011, after October 15th
Isaac has a cold - actually we all got the cold.
I can't remember when Isla got her first cold, but she was at least one and I completely freaked out.
